Did You Know that 90% of Serotonin Levels Come from the Colon?
By Nancy Redlich Did you know the acronym for the standard American diet is SAD? It is a fitting acronym since our American diet is in a SAD state of affairs. With the rise of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, ulcers and depression not only in adults but now in our children one can look to our diets as a big part of the problem. Stress is always an easy thing for our society to come by. We have all experienced it in our lives and now so have our children. There is never enough “time” to do all of what we create as our “life-expectations.” We go to work, take care of the kids, drive them to school, their practices & games, do the cleaning, go grocery shopping, or work long hours enduring the “crises” around us. We create our stresses to a degree and let them internalize into negative feelings or emotions, which eventually lead to physical manifestations of disease and/or depression. Not only do we NOT make enough time for ourselves but we continually spiral down a path of poor eating habits. Why not? Who has time to make dinner? It is just easier to get a pizza or go to Mc D’s, right? Of course it is also easier to pop a pill to make it “go away.” Unfortunately, taking prescription medication over long periods of time can lead to liver, kidney or heart damage. For some people it is an absolute necessity in order for them to function, however what they do not know is that by changing the way they eat, they will actually improve their depression by improving their serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps the brain with necessary chemical reactions & functions, which help in maintaining a balanced state. Most people have heard how exercise boosts their endorphin levels, which are “feel good” neurotransmitters but never learn how to boost their serotonin levels. Since the standard American diet (SAD) is full of processed, refined chemicals, sugars, hormones & antibiotics the average person is walking around with an inflamed colon and does not even know it. Eventually they need to be treated for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), Gerd (gastro-esophageal reflux disease), hiatal hernias or ulcers–and again turn to medication. What most people do not know is that these are just symptoms of a bigger problem. The problem is the inflammation of the gut that has been produced by poor dietary habits, a diet full of processed foods loaded with trans-fatty acids, refined sugars, hydrogenated oils, hormones and/or antibiotics. Many people are too acidic in their guts. This means their ph balance, which is important for normal GI function to occur, become out of balance. This can lead to an overproduction of yeast or candida or a destruction of healthy bacteria, which in turn leads to an increase in fluid and inflammation. Many people are not just overweight from excess fat. Many could be carrying excess fluid in their guts, which may be the result of inflammation from irritated tissues and toxins that have spilled, leaked or backed-up from their large to their small intestines. Since the majority of serotonin is produced in the colon, does it not make sense to treat the cause? If you could change what you put into your body and reduce the fluid and inflammation, restore the healthy bacteria and gut function to a more balanced state and boost your serotonin levels, do you think you would feel better?
